Natural Thyroid

A reduction in Thyroid affects every cell in our body producing a broad range of age-related problems.

The thyroid gland is an endocrine gland that is located just beneath the Adam’s apple in the throat. It works by secreting hormone thyroxine into the bloodstream. It also controls the body’s metabolism. This is the rate at which the body burns calories for energy. It is also used to regulate the body’s fat utilization. A fall in the secretion of hormones from the thyroid gland (hypothyroidism) can produce confusion, memory problems, poor concentration, weight gain, cold hands and feet, sleep disorder, menstrual problems, low energy levels. A thyroid that is underactive is also a key cause of common painful musculoskeletal conditions known as fibromyalgia.

Who is at risk?

Aging often results in hypothyroidism and it is believed by some in this field to be an under-diagnosed epidemic. Taking thyroid supplements can restore hypothyroidism and consequently overcome a wide range of aging disorders.

Women over 40 are most often affected by a thyroid deficiency which can result in a decline in thyroid function. Even men and teenagers can also experience lowered thyroid function, particularly if it occurs in the family.

In accordance with some estimates, as many as 15 to 20% of women over the age of 60 may experience subclinical hypothydroism (this means they would benefit from thyroid supplementation although most doctors would say based on standard laboratory test results that they have no thyroid pathology needing treatment. Every year 5 to 15% of these women over the age of 60 may have subclinical hypothyroidism (meaning they would benefit from thyroid supplementation. Even though most doctors say based on laboratory tests that they had no thyroid pathology requiring treatment). Every year 5 to 15% of these women experience symptoms which can play a part in reducing their lives.

A condition called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis may be caused by some forms of hypothyroidism which is clinically diagnosed as thyroid deficiency syndrome. This autoimmune disease involves the body’s own immune defenses to turn on the thyroid gland causing an inflammatory process that sooner or later destroys it.

Immunosenesence, is a reduction of immune that occurs with age and is linked with an increased autoimmune reaction. This developing process is a major reason why thyroid function falls with age.

Whole-natural or synthetic supplements?

Available in two forms, one being the whole natural supplements and the second being synthetic supplements. It is nearly always better to use a whole-natural thyroid extract because the synthetic versions usually only consists of one of the thyroid hormones (such as T3 or T4) while whole natural thyroids include a fuller spectrum of thyroid hormones (including T1, T2, T3 and T4)

Through measuring a certain hormone known as Thyroid Stimulating hormone (TSH) it can be decided whether supplementation is required. The relationship between thyroid levels and TSH levels is inverse which is to say that as thyroid hormones levels increase in the body, TSH levels usually decline. This is due to thyroid function changes with age. It is helpful to observe TSH levels regularly to insure that the quantity of thyroid supplements being taken maintains appropriately youthful amounts.

Scientific data which is both experimental and clinical strongly supports the idea that a small daily amount of whole thyroid extract as a dietary supplement can have a broad array of positive influences.

Dr James Isaacs a revolutionary cardiovascular surgeon from Baltimore carried out a classic study in 1974 and found that those who took ¼ grain of thyroid (whole thyroid is measured in grains, 60 mg = 1 grain) mixed with minerals and vitamins over a period of 10 years showed significant improvement in cardiovascular protective function.
